For me the biggest difference is the scope: the Classic Joule Studio was basically a low-code tool inside SAP Build to create Joule Skills and Agents. The New Joule Studio is the next generation of SAP Build itself — you start from a business intent in natural language and it takes you through the whole lifecycle (Idea Board → PRD → Specification → Code → Deploy), running on a managed runtime so you don't touch infrastructure.

Bonus points: it now supports both low-code and pro-code side by side (embedded n8n for workflows, Vercel integration for React/Next.js apps), and everything is grounded in enterprise context via the SAP Knowledge Graph.

Hi

Completed the Week 2 challenge,

Apart from all the differentiators already mentioned, one of the key difference between Classic Joule Studio and the new one is the new Joule Studio is SAP Managed. Means the entire infrastructure, lifecycle, runtime everything is managed by SAP. There is no overhead efforts on the Customer side to maintain this Tool.

The primary difference comes down to how we build: Classic Joule Studio requires  to manually map out individual skills, prompts, and workflows step-by-step using SAP Build’s low-code tools. In contrast, the New Joule Studio uses an outcome-driven approach we describe the business goal in plain language, and the platform handles the heavy lifting by auto-generating the logic, technical blueprints, and code behind the scenes.

A few other distinct shifts include:

Scope of Builds: Classic focuses mainly on custom conversational skills, whereas the New Studio lets us construct full SAP CAP apps, complex workflow automation (via n8n integration), and upgrade-safe agent extensions.

Developer Flexibility: Classic is strictly low-code, while the New Studio connects low-code ease with pro-code flexibility, allowing us to plug directly into traditional IDEs, version control systems like Git, and CI/CD pipelines.

Classic Joule Studio focuses on building skills and integrations. New Joule Studio provides a more comprehensive agent-building environment, allowing you to create and orchestrate AI agents with autonomy.

The most important difference for me is that new Joule studio is intend based you start with a description of your business problem and it creates all the the steps needed without having the need of configuring manually

  • Classic Joule Studio
    • Lives in SAP Build on SAP BTP.
    • Uses SAP Build Apps, Build Code, BPA, and Build Work Zone.
    • Orchestrates workflows via SAP Build Process Automation.
  • New Joule Studio
    • Built on the SAP Business AI Platform.
    • Visual workflow design with low-code simplicity.

Classic Joule Studio was primarily focused on extending Joule through custom skills and agents. The new Joule Studio expands this vision into a complete AI development platform for enterprise-scale agents, applications, and workflows. With the integration of n8n as the orchestration layer, Joule Studio now provides low-code workflow automation, agent orchestration, and SAP/non-SAP connectivity from a single AI-first development environment

Classic Joule Studio : Manual Lifecycle Setup: Developers drive individual phases (analysis, functional docs, test, deploy).

New Joule Studio: SAP Managed Runtime: Infrastructure, runtime, and deployment orchestration are fully managed by SAP.

Classic Joule Studio = extend Joule with skills and agents.
New Joule Studio = SAP’s broader AI-first development environment to build, run, and govern agents, apps, and workflows from business intent

Classic Joule Studio = you build agents manually, step by step (drag/configure tools, skills, logic) inside SAP Build.

New Joule Studio = you just tell it what you want in plain language (intent-based), and it builds the agent for you — powered by the newer SAP Business AI Platform

Classic = "Configure a Joule skill in SAP Build using forms and steps."

New 2.0 = "Describe a business outcome — Studio generates the agent, picks the tools (MCP/A2A), wires the orchestration, and manages the runtime."

Key strategic shifts

  1. From configure → generate — intent-driven development replaces step-by-step configuration
  2. From closed → open — MCP, A2A, any LLM, external frameworks (AutoGen, LangGraph)
  3. From Build-embedded → standalone managed — zero provisioning, zero infra
  4. From skill-only → full lifecycle — agents, apps, workflows, monitoring, extensibility
  5. From single-agent → multi-agent — orchestration, delegation, agent-as-a-tool

For me, Classic Joule Studio extends Joule; New Joule Studio builds complete AI solutions.

One of its fundamental and distinctive characteristics is that the development process begins with a natural language description of the business problem.

As per my understanding, Classic Joule Studio is basically a feature bolted onto SAP Build, we can use it to hand-build specific agents and skills and it's mostly a governance/licensing thing (entitlements, roles, BTP setup) rather than a full dev environment. New Joule Studio on the other hand, is a whole standalone platform built around describing what you want in plain language and having it generate a proper spec (PRD) first which then gets turned into the actual agent or app and it plays nice with tools devlopers already use like VS Code, Cursor and LangChain, instead of keeping is boxed into SAP's own tooling. So really it's the difference between "a feature for building agents" and "a full AI-native platform for building and evolving them."

The Classic Joule Studio mainly focused on building and configuring Joule Skills and Agents for specific use cases.

The New Joule Studio goes beyond that. It provides a unified, end-to-end development experience where you can build AI agents, workflows, and applications in one place — from simple no-code development to advanced pro-code developmentScreenshot 2026-08-11 193511.png.                                                                   Joule

In Classic, you open the tool and start configuring — define the skill, wire up the steps, set up the agent. It's a dev-first experience...

New Joule Studio 2.0 flips that. You describe what you're trying to achieve in plain language, and the platform generates a working agent spec from it. Its "vibe coding" for enterprise AI - except with SAP's business context, data, and governance baked in from the start

The old Joule Studio was more focused on developers who will drag and drop the agents. While new Joule is intent-based, so even the users can be aware of the requirement and development flow.
