xml files to be read

hi all,

my scenario is that a middleware .net generates xml files which i have to pick up into sap r/3 and then also generate xml files to that middleware.

Now my question is

1) Does the xml file need to follow any specifications to be read?

2)What is the best method to follow to read the xml file?

Note: I Have no access to either a sap .net connector or XI
