Why we save in Package

Hi Everyone,

                    I m learning ABAP, I want to know one basic thing but imp. is that.. Why we save everything in package although we can save as a local object. I dont have real time exposer so plz help me to understand this in realtime scenario.. ..and in real time do we save over development as a local object ?
