For any object a version is created when it is transported from one system to other. e.g. Development to Sandbox system.
The advantage of having different versions is that at any time, if you want to see what was the status of the report at a particular date, you can see that. Also, it provides you the facility of retrieving and using an older version of the object.
You can access the versions for a report from Utilities menu--> Version management.
