Unicode to Non-Unicode

Can we migrate configuration from a Unicode SAP to a non-Unicode SAP environment ?.

We have initially made some configuration in ECC 6.0 Unicode but later we decided to go for non-unicode.

I have couple of SAP notes which are about the complexity and course of action on account of this migration, But still i would like to know your experience if some one did smiliar type of migration.

Hi Ashutosh,

Unicode to Non-Unicode is not supported. And I don't know tools to support this type of migration. Even the production of a ECC6 system as Non-Unicode system is not supported by SAP. You could get special permissions from SAP, to run for a while as Non-Unicode system, if you have special needs. But sooner or later you have to migrate to Unicode.

What would be your benefit to run the system as Non-Unicode? When all your systems run with Unicode, you have much less problems with text encoding. The Non-Unicode systems use SAP encoding which are not transparent in all terms. For example the database content could not be views in all cases by database tools if you run on Non-Unicode. Especially if you run different code pages in one system. With Unicode you could read all data with all your tools (if they are able to read (and write) Unicode encoded text).

Best regards

Ralph

Asutosh,

If required you can always view te output in non-unicode format even though you have upgraded to ECC 6.

Use the additions

Encoding non-unicode

or legacy text or legacy binary for open dataset

to view the output in non-unicode format

Hi,

If I understand your question correctly it is not possible to move data from UNICODE to NON-UNICODE system via migration. However, if you think of transporting data from an UNICODE to a NON-UNICODE system please have alook at SAP Note 638357.
