Why there is 0 instead of other number representing the successful return of the code result for the syst variable sy-subrc.

Return value set by the following ABAP statements. In general, a content of 0 means that the statement was executed without problems.

· ASSIGNsets SY-SUBRC to 0 if assignment to field symbol is possible, otherwise 4.

Any Value other than 0 (zero) represents an error in execution of the code. So to differentiate between Succesful Execution and Failure they might have put 0 for success code.
