SAP Functional enhancement knowledge

Hello, everyone.

As a functional SAP consultant, how can I determine what type of enhancement should be used for a specific scenario? How to search for a user exit to execute a validation in a specific field, for example? How does a user exit work? It prompts a window to insert an abap code in between SAP standard objects? Why do we have to use an specific user exit? The same questions above apply to BADIs.
