SAP - a database?

Hi Experts,

I am a beginner. Am little bit confused.

I would like to know whether the SAP itself is a database where all the data are stored or SAP is connected with some other database to store these data?

SAP is the front end and it is combined with the back end database for storing the data. backend may be Oracle , SQL Server or any database...
