Reading Barcode in SAP

Hi,

My client is having a legacy for Point of sales with Barcode scanner attached thru USB port where the following process happens,

When the user open the transaction and the cursor is in a particular field and when he scans the product barcode the details are captured in the transaction ( barcode is captured on the screen of Tcode).

IN SAP can this thing happen . Can we directly caputure the barcode on to a SAP Transaction screen field directly with any any interface/middleware.

Kindly clarify and give your valuable inputs in carrying out this process in SAP.
