Maximum length that a database table field can hold

Hello All,

I am creating a database table to store different values corresponding to a particular feature coming under different countries. Some of the values have to hold more than 700characters, which is basically like a paragraph. I have found that the maximum length a table field can hold is 255characters.

Is there any way by which i can enter more than 500 characters.

hi,

create a data element which is having 500 length, and using this dataelement create table filed.

try to place this field as last field of table.

I have tried to create data element with different data types, but it is not accepting any types which is specifying more than 255 characters. Then only i posted query in the forum.

Can you help me with some other solution, with which i can enter more than 700characters?

Hi Shino,

Declare your field of type LCHR which can take the length from 256 to MAX.

Hi Shino,

The maximum lenght of the field in a table will be governed by the data type that you assigned to that field.So if you want to have your field length bigger you better go for character data types.

i think the maximum lengh a field can hold is 256.

check with it.

In your case the field is of data type C ie Character. And the maximum lenght of the character is 255.

So I dont think so you can extend it to 700.

If you define it as a string, the underlying database, Oracle at least, will create it as a "CLOB". That might be useful to you.

Hi,

If the Max length that is required is 700 characters then:

1) Isn't it possible in your case to divide the same into mutiple Fields of having 255 length each.

2) In sap there are some tables which store whole Code like table for storing Code for reports in SAP is

REPOSRC But the whole code is first stored in Hexadecimal format and not in terms of direct characters.

May be on same lines you can change the CHARACTER format and then store it and again convertt he same for further use.

You can have look into the Table REPOSRC . May be it helps.

Hi Shino,

Try appending a field at the end of the table which is of deep data type like LCHAR, STRING, etc

But after appending a deep data type data element no, further fields can be added at the end of the table.
