langauge pack vs unicode

Hi,

our system is non-unicode. To support additional langauage, we are evaluating following options.

1. apply language pack,or

2. make system unicode compliant

Please suggest if making system unicode compliant is must for applying language pack.

and also which of the options(1 or 2) is recommended effort wise.

Making system UNICODE enabled is always a good option as UNICODE systems will support all languages.

Hi Vithal ,

You can download the language CD from service.sap.com/swdc --> Installations and Upgrades --> SAP Application Components . Select your component then OS and DB. You can see Language DVDs there .

you can use all languages which are supported by the codepage(!!!) the system is running on.

E.g. if your systems run on Latin-1 you can use all these West(!)-European languages in this system together.

But i would recommend unicode bcoz

Unicode allocates each character with an individual number irrespective of the platform, programme or language.It also maintains a trouble-free understanding between the different language components within a system

Please refer to the SAP documentation at

<a href="http://service.sap.com/unicode">Unicode</a> and choose in the navigation tree <b>Unicode at SAP</b>. You will find the following statement there:

<i>...

To help our customers transition smoothly to future-proof technologies, future versions of SAP applications will be exclusively in 64-bit and Unicode starting in 2007, as described in the corresponding customer letter.

...</i>

Thus, in the very near future SAP will only support Unicode systems. Therefore, it is reasonable to choose the option Unicode instead of language packages since Unicode conversion of <b>multi-codepage systems</b> is even more laborious.

Hi,

I have 2 additional question related to this.

1. If I make the system unicode compliant, do I still have to apply some language pack? or it starts supporting those language on its own.

2. If my system in non-unicode, and I apply codepage set(say Latin-1), then will all western european language be supported without applying language pack? or do I have to apply codepage set and then language.
