Inbound IDoc-Message variant and Message Function

Hello experts,

I am working on support projects for ALE/IDocs. Inbound IDocs settings have been already configured. While creating inbound parameters what is the use of "Message variant and Message Function options". Screen shot for reference:

Message Variant and Message functions can be any arbitary value. It is mainly used to differentiate IDocs with same Message Type but having different use cases. Some examples below:-

i) Differentiate IDocs that are coming from or going to different external parties (this allows you to narrow down your search when using the monitoring tools)

ii) Differentiate IDocs that need different processing (use different process code)

Ok. so these Message Variant and Message functions has to be created somewhere in tcode?

Nope. They are just entered directly during partner profile configuration in WE20. It can be any value up to 3 characters.
