how do you open graphical screen painter

Hi all-

I'm using PlatinGUI 6.30r2. How do I open the graphical screen painter (after going into object navigator, I want to place controls on a screen)?

I clicked Layout, but get what appears to be a bunch of horizontal lines-- nothing like a screen painter.

In my gui, you must set the setting to turn it on. In SE38, click utilities, settings, click the Screen Painter tab, click the checkbox for grapical layout editor. If this doesn't work, then you don't have the screen painter installed on the pc. You then must install that component of the gui.

I think there is a problem. My machine appears to go into an infinite loop when I clicked that option. Is there a free rpm that installs this component of the GUI somewhere? If so, where is the ftp so I can download it?

I'm surprised... one would think the programmers of SAP would be able to prevent a bug as serious as this-- maybe it's the penalty I pay for using the free evaluation.

Kevin, Don't think that you have an infinite loop, the regular screen editor will open eventually once the connection to screen painter times out. You will need to load the screen painter component of SAPgui. It is not part of the regualar install. If you can get a hold of some sapgui install cds, then you can install it. Put the cd in, and start the installation, it should ask you what you want to do, you say "install component" or something to that effect, you should then get a tree like structure on the left, look thru the tree for "Screen Painter" and check the checkbox next to it. It should be under something like "Development Tools". Install it, then you should be good to go.

If you don't have cds for the gui, you will have to download from service.sap.com. You will need your ID and password.

Maybe the graphical screen painter is functionality SAP does not include in its free Linux evaluation. Is there a Graphical Screen Painter included in the evaluation version of SAP? I do not have any login or password... my company will not pay for anything so I can only use the free software SAP provides. Does the FTP site allow anonymous logins? I'm running SAP Netweaver on FC4.

Oh, so then you are using the SAPgui that has been provided in the Linix CD? Was the gui a seperate install? Can you start the installation of the gui from that CD? If so, you should be able to add the component. I have never installed the gui from a sneak preview version, I've always used a separate install of the gui.

Actually, the GUI provided on the CD is 6.30r4. After trying to install I got this:

rpm –Uvh path/PlatinGUI-Linux-6.30-4.i386.rpm

>./gui

JAVA=/usr/lib/java/bin/java: Command not found

PH=/opt/sapgui/6.30rev4/jar: Command not found

SOI=/opt/staroffice7/program/classes: Command not found

JAVA: undefined variable

I read elsewhere on one of these forums that the free GUI on the sneak preview doesn't work so well with the database (and learned this by sad experience myself), so I downloaded and installed an earlier version from the website:

ftp –d ftp.sap.com

name: anonymous

pw: email account

cd to /pub/sapgui/

get PlatinGUI-Linux-630r2.jar

I installed that with java –jar PlatinGUI-Linux-630r2.jar, but I didn't see any prompts about installing specific components, so I have no idea what you are referring to (must be on the software that people pay for). That is the version I am currently using, and it is working fine except for this graphical screen painter is not coming up. Now my ABAP book is from 2002, so I'm sure it is included somewhere. Do you have any suggestions? Don't worry, you will get your points.

I've never worked with the linux version, so I really can't offer anything about it. I can only give you my experience in the windows world. Have you tried download the Sneak Preview ABAP 6.40 from this site? You can download the gui from there as well. It's on the windows platform, but it works really good.

I cannot use any version of SAP for Windows because I cannot change my laptop name (if I change the name, I cannot even log on to the Windows half of my laptop, which has all the firm's proprietary software). If you do find someone that has gotten the SAP GUI 6.30r4 (or higher) to work on Fedora, please let me know.

Why would you need to change the name of your computer to install Sneak Preview ABAP on your windows side. Is your computer name too long?

Actually, the firm does have an SAP installation for R&D, complete with developer privileges. But at my current client, I am restricted in that I cannot use their network to access an external server. In fact, I'll go to jail if I even plug in my laptop to their network. But they have an SAP system here, but I do not have developer access to it... I'm an accountant actually, with a programming background. This SAP on Linux has been a little project on the side when things are slow... and it has been a PAIN getting it to work, trust me.
