As mentioned above, you would need Object Dependencies. These can be at the Configuration Profile as Procedures. Look at using the $SET_DEFAULT and $DEL_DEFAULT statements. Just to clarify, Object Dependencies are not ABAP. You can search on Procedures in the SAP Help to learn about $SET_DEFAULT.
the object dependencies themselves aren't ABAP, but you can use functions (defined in transaction CU65) in an object dependency, that are linked to function modules (which are ABAP).
Yes Stephan, you are correct, you can incorporate Function Modules into your Object Dependencies through Variant Functions. These Function Modules are very handy for Complex Logic and/or Calcualtions for Characteristic Values.
