ALV is the abbreviation for ABAP list viewer or nowadays SAP list viewer.
List data are displayed in an Excel like manner where the user can change the layout of the display very easily.
To see the difference between a "classical" list and an ALV list simply call transaction SE16 and display any table (e.g. KNA1 for customers). When the list is displayed choose menu <i>Settings -> User Parameters</i> and switch from the SE16 standard list to ALV grid list.
