It is not required !
If you have good technical specification of the requirements, you can do without any functional knowledge, but it is easier to have function knowledge when you should test your implementation and off course understand it. You can advice then the functional guys about the proposed solution.

Hans

if you have functional knowledge, it will help you .

Hi Vijay,
Having functional knowledge as an abap programmer is a big help in terms of coding since you know where to fetch the data, what fields are required, etc. Also, you don't depend a lot with your functional person and this can also help you in your career if you want to move to the functional side of SAP. Hope it helps...
P.S. Please award points if it helps...

hi Vijay ,
If you are working in an Implementation project then yes you need some functional knowledge besides Functional consultants ,
and if Support project then seperate functional consultants are appionted for ABAPERS queries .

Hi,
For ABAPer , Functional knowledge is not essential.
If you know the Business flow , it will help you in understanding things better.
Generally Functional consultant gives specifications for changes.
If you have to prepate Technical specs, Then Functional knowledge will help you.
Reward if useful,
Thanks,

Dear friend..it comes along with ur experience..but its all depends upon ur 'Buisness Apptitude'.

Hi Vijay,
Functoinal knowledge is any day appreciated if you know..
You can enquire abt the flow from your functional guy as to what business importance it has when he gives you a task.
If you can develop more experience in any one domain say SD , HR , MM ...you would be techo-functional which has great value in the market...
The above is the industry scenario told to me , though personally speaking for being techofunctional you need v gud amt of exposure to tht domain,....whereas being more technically inclined ..getting into XI or EP something later as an ABAPer can be also highly fetching...
For implementation ,you can ask ur functional guy where you get stuck ..though it is always better to be knowing before hand ..i mean they would be preferred..
Reward if useful!!

Hi Vijay,
For an ABAPER functional knowledge is not required.
For any implementation projects there are Functional consultants who take care of every thing.ABAPER just write the code based on the functional spec given by Functional consultant. If u want then u can be a technofunctional by spreading ur knowledge in functionality.
Reward points if helpful.
