function module to convert string to decimals?

is there any function module to convert string value in to decimals...string value contains exponent form...or any other way to convert if there is no funtion module..

please let me know...

data: p type p decimals 3.

str = '1.2345678900000000E+08'.

f = str.

p = f.

write:/ p.
