Hi,
Can any one give clear definition of FIELDCATALOG ? and what is the purpose of it ? FIELDCATALOG will be more suitable in which cases for displaying output ?
Good answers will be definetely rewarded.

Hi,
Fieldcatalog : used to display ALV.
to populate it we can use Fm REUSE_ALV_FIELDCATALOG_MERGE or we can directly populate it.
REUSE_ALV_FIELDCATALOG_MERGE : This function module is used to
populate a fieldcatalog which is essential to display the data in ALV.
If the output data is from a single dictionary table and all the
columns are selected, then we need not exclusively create the field cat
alog. Its enough to mention the table name as a parameter
(I_structure name) in the REUSE_ALV_LIST_DISPLAY. But in other cases
we need to create it.
The Important Parameters are :
I. Export :
i. I_program_name : report id
ii. I_internal_tabname : the internal output table
iii. I_inclname : include or the report name where all the dynamic forms are handled.
II Changing
ct_fieldcat : an internal table with the type SLIS_T_FIELDCAT_ALV which is
declared in the type pool SLIS.
check the transaction code MC18(create) MC19(Change) MC20(Display).
Field Catalogs
Use
With this function, you can create new field catalogs and work with existing field catalogs. Archiving information structures are defined on the basis of Field Catalogs.
Standard field catalogs, which are designed to cover most application requirements, are supplied with the Archive Information System. You should therefore only create your own field catalogs if the fields contained in the standard field catalogs do not meet your requirements.
If a standard transaction of an application only allows for standard field catalogs, customer specific field catalogs are not recognized by the system.
Prerequisites
You need to have some expert knowledge to use this function. For example, you should be familiar with the data model of the archiving object up to table level.
Features
Working With Existing Field Catalogs
You can change the definition of the existing field catalogs, for example, by adding further source fields or changing the allocation of data- and key fields. When working with existing field catalogs, you basically use the same procedures you would use for creating field catalogs (see below).
You must copy a standard field catalog from the SAP namespace into your own namespacethat is, make it a customer-specific field catalogbefore you make any changes to it. All entries that begin with "SAP" belong to the SAP namespace and may no be changed.
Creating New Field Catalogs
When you create a new field catalog, you have the options of using fields from:
· one source table
· more than one source table
For information on procedures, see Creating Field Catalogs (One Source Table).
To create field catalogs from more than one source table, refer to the additional Notes, which you must observe.
Deleting Field Catalogs
Before you delete a field catalog, you must first delete all of the archive information structures that use this field catalog. The deletion of catalogs that are still being used is prevented by a deletability check. If you try to delete an SAP standard field catalog, the system issues a warning message to this effect.

Priyanka.

HI
in ALV reports we use field catalog to display column titles.
this table should be passed to one of the parameters to any of the function modules
Reuse_alv_list_display.
Reuse_alv_grid_display.
Reuse_hireseq_list_diplay.
Thanks & Regards,

hi,
Fieldcatalog is to design the output in an alv.
In an ALV u need to design the fieldcatalog for the output to be displayed.
It has the inbuilt structure for everything such as column position, fieldname, fieldlabel and everything.
U can get the fieldcatalog from the type-pool SLIS.

Hi smitha,
FieldCatalog is used with ALV and they are used to control the display of ALV columns.

hi,
field catalog is the structure or layout for displaying the output in ALV. field catalog is available in an structure SLIS_T_FIELDCATALOG and the function module used is REUSE_ALV_FIELDCATALOG_MERGE. WE HAVE TO CREATE A INTERNAL TABLE OF SLIS_T_FIELDCATALOG structure and can assign the filed names differently for them.
for ex: when we use matnr in our program and in output it should be displayed as material no that text can be given using this field catalog. i.e. it has a field called SEL_TEXT_M, SEL_TEXT_L, SEL_TEXT_S for this field we can assign our text which is displayed at runtime in outlist. like this there are so many fields available in field catalog such as
1. we can do individual summing using field DO_SUM.
2. sorting can be assigned.
3. alternate colors to report.
4. we can provide a conformation pop up window while deleting a field for leavimg the report.
5. event handling...............
if helpful reward some points.

hi,
1) The field cataog is a table of type LVC_T_FCAT(oops based alv grid) and SLIS_T_FIELDCAT_ALV( in alv function modules) that contains information on the fields to be displayed. The ALV uses this table to recognize the type of a field.
2) You can use fields of the catalog to determine the number format and column properties of the list to be displayed.
3) If the structure of your output table corresponds to a structure stored in the Data Dictionary (DDIC), the ALV Grid Control can use this information to generate the field catalog automatically. In this case, all fields of this DDIC structure are displayed in the list.

<b>Definition</b>
The field cataog is a table of type LVC_T_FCAT that contains information on the fields to be displayed. The ALV uses this table to recognize the type of a field, for example.
The <b>field catalog contains more than 60 fiel</b>ds, some of which are only used internally. Those fields that are relevant to application developers are described in Fields of the Field Catalog
<b>Use</b>
You can use fields of the catalog to determine the number format and column properties of the list to be displayed.
<b>Generating the Field Catalog Automatically</b>
If the structure of your output table corresponds to a structure stored in the <b>Data Dictionary (DDIC)</b>, the ALV Grid Control can use this information to generate the field catalog automatically. In this case, all fields of this DDIC structure are displayed in the list.
<b>Fields of the Field Catalog</b>
The following table assigns a purpose to each field. For information on the minimum selection of required fields in the field catalog, see Generating the Field Catalog Manually.
You use field <b>FIELDNAME</b> of the field catalog to define a reference to a field in the output table. All settings made through fields in the same row of the field catalog refer to the output column specified in <b>FIELDNAME.</b>
<b>
please see LINK for the Fields in the field catalog used as properties for display in the ALV .</b>
