Hi Naresh,
Welcome to SDN :).
Legacy system is nothing but the old data storage system(or erp system) which is in future not going to be used.
So you transfer data from this system to your new SAP system and its called data transfer.

Hi Naresh,
Legacy system are the old system like IBM mainframe (which used cobol language ).
A legacy system is an old computer system or application program that continues to be used because the user (typically an organization) does not want to replace or redesign it.
As everyone is looking for the upgradation and a good ERP for their data, the data is transferred from those systems to the ERP enabled system.
LSMW is one of the methods in SAP to transfer the data.

Hi,
When a database is accessed directly by SAP then it is SAP system.
When a database is accessed by other than SAP i.e. VB, Java. is called Legacy System.
In order to read data from Legacy system: Data transferred through Flat files (.TXT, .CSV etc), also through IDOCS.
so By BDC, LSMW or through FM to read IDOC, data will be uploaded into SAP i.e. SAP's database (oracle).
Please reward if useful.
Regards,
Ramesh.
