Changing Data type of Data Element in Table

Hi All

I have a requirement to change the Data type of a data element which is used in a table.

Currently the data element is of type NUMC ( 10 ).

I want to have 2 decimal places , so i need to change it to DEC ( 10 , 2 ). The Data Element is used in other tables also.

Is there any possibility of Data Loss or should i directly change the length ? Please Suggest.

I hope it is a customer object, only used in customer objects? All related database tables will need to be adjusted, for smaller tables I think this will be done automatically at activation of the changed data element, otherwise use tx SE14.

Going from NUMC to DEC should be OK as long as you don't change the field names, but test in a sandbox first if you have one. I would assume a value eg. "0000000100" would end up as 100.00.

Hello puneet,

use the where used list from SE11 and check whether its extensively used.

if yes , then you should not be changing the data type.

the system would throw an error messge if you tries to change the data type(except for length)

use a Z field for your new requirement.

Hi,

better if u use a new Z filed for that data element,there u can change/give the datatype.u can use that Z field for other table also.

Hi,

We can change the data type of an data element, provided check the where use list of the data element.

if it does n't effect the tables or programs where it as been used and its functionality, then it can be changed .

NUMC is alpha numeric where as DEC is numeric there will be mismatch, it is better to delete the datatype and create a new data type of DEC (10,2).
