is there a way to call a java app on the client from within SAP?

I am not sure if it is possible from SAP r/3 to java app. I know we can call a RFC function in SAP r/3 via .net connector. I am not sure if something similar exists from Java to sap r/3.

Its possible when using Java Webdynpro and Netweaver Developer studio.

I am not either since I have not found anything in any forums. I figured I may not have been asking the right question.

But I want to be able to envoke a java program from SAP passing some data and getting a result back in the form of a string.
