Buffer trace for an instance of an application server?

Hello!

Under ST05 I can switch on the buffer trace. I can use 'Trace on for user'.

An application server can have more instances. Each instance has its own (set of) buffers. If I am logged on instance A and switch on the buffer trace for all users...

Does the buffer trace store all stmts executed by users logged on instance A, or on all instances of the corresponding application server?

Currently I am not authorized to test this under ST05. That is why I am asking...

btw. SAP Note 65054 says that the trace is run for an application server.

Hi Holger,

OSS 65054 is right - it's always application server specific (just as the buffer filling itself is application server specific - depending on the already executed table accesses).

Hi Christian,

I was able to check this.

By using transaction SM50 I logged on 2 different instances of an application server.

On instance A, I switched on the buffer trace. On instance B I did this as well.

Next, I analyzed a buffered table on instance A. Afterwards I listed both buffer trace files. The one made in instance A and the other made on instance B. The buffer trace set up for instance A had entries which showed what i have had done on instance A (analyzing a table). Ther buffer trace of instance B showed nothing.

Thus I think the buffer trace ('for this server') traces activities corresponding to the instance you are currently logged on.

What do you think?

Fine, you got the authority.

But sorry not being clear enough: yes, trace is always just for current application server. If you want to trace a different server, you can switch with SM51 to an alternative server.

Also trace for other users can only fetch actions on same server - sometimes this is nasty, when you just try to fetch the next execution of a specific transaction of the next user.
