BAPI_SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT1 or 2

I am using this function module to create a sales order.

We are also using configurable materials and using the relevant tables in the BAPI...

Online, if the material item 00010 is entered into the sales order is configurable a new line item is automatically entered into the order 00020. The user selects this material and selects the characterisitic they require. The material number for this characterisitis is then substituted into item 00020. Save and go.

eg:

Item 00010 Matnr01

Enter

Item 00010 Matnr01

Item 00020 Matnr02 Higher level item 00010

Select charaterisitc material

Item 00010 Matnr01

Item 00020 Matnr02A Higher level item 00010

I wish to do this in the background using the BAPI.

But material MAT02 is not being substituted with the characteristic material Mat02A

Can anyone supply an example of the best way to set up this BAPI?
