Trying to use BAPI-MATERIAL_MAINTAINDATA_RT to create material type HAWA and is configured for internal number assignment. This fails to assign material number and expecting a material number. I would appreciate any thoughts on this.

im not really sure what your problem is but in case of SAP Retail you can use BADI "BADI_EAN_SYSTEMATIC" to check and change the material/EAN number.
