BAPI for Batch Managed Material

From a scanning device I need to perform a physical inventory. Within the same plant I have batch-managed and non-batch managed materials. When I scan a materials’ barcode, I need the system to determine if the item is batch managed or not. If the item is batched managed, then I need to prompt the user to enter (into the scanning device) not only the qty, but the batch number. If not batch managed, then user will enter qty only. Any ideas on which BAPI could be used in such a situation?
