Hi Mohan,

To explain in a very laymans language an ASN is a sort of a pre-alert or a sort of issuing a message to the business partner in advance about a specific delivery schedule.

Say for example, One company has outsourced the shipment process to a thirdparty. Now suppose there is a new sales order which the company has created for a customer. So once the Delivery is created against the sales order the system ( if configured ) will send an ASN to the thirdparty to inform that there is a delivery is to be done on so and so date. Based on this ASN or pre-alert the thirdparty will make necessary arrangements in order to make sure that the delivery is on time.

ASN will generally have delivery related information. Generally a ASN is send electronically using an IDOC.

In Some instances it also means:

A file or document received from vendors, suppliers or the central packaging facility indicating the material that is on the way to the warehouse. This means that the company has already shipped the goods from their premises and it will take some time before it reaches the destination. So this is sort of a notification to the customer indicating that his order will be arriving on so and so date.

Cheers

VJ
