Are Database Tables Unicode complaint??

I want to know are databse tables of SAP R/3 unicode complaint. And also who will take care whether they are unicode complaint or not? (ABAP Developers or BASIS people)

Database tables may need to be adjusted especially if you have added include or append structures to standard SAP tables. But 99% of the table will be unicode compliant.

However, the data in the database is not converted to unicode. Basis need to perform language mapping and conversion excersice to ensure it is processed corrrectly during upgrade.
