This would be a nice feature, but the data is not going to be updated at all.
There are several possibilites to populate the new characterisitc:
1) As you mentioned, reload from the source (after having changed the update/transfer rules accordingly)
2) Extract "old" data from the original cube into a temporary cube, extract back into the original cube uodating the missing characteristc
3) If you can derive the missing characteristic from the attribute of another characteristic, you should consider to use navigational attributes in your cube.
