hello friends
i need some information about some data types like xstring and string etc.we are using C for character and D for date etc na.
I need the same system representation of xstring and string n all .i know tht some people used G for xstring but i don't know exactly if u people knoe
plZ PLZ reply me soon . its urgent.

Hi Lavanya,
What is your exact reuqirement ?
By the way, in ABAP programming you use it as STRING and XSTRING itself.

i know roopesh
but internally somewhere we r expressing inplace of type xstring and all .i need specifically like what we r using this internally in the system.

i need while declaration of character we r using C like that for xstring and for string what we r using to declare not as type xstring . i need is there anything that can represent internally in the system declaration for those two.
thanks for the answers

Hi Lavanya,
In ABAP programming you have only options STRING and XSTRING to use for such data types. But then since you are emphasizing the term <b>Internal</b> representation, I can say this. As part of ALV Catalog structure <b>LVC_S_FCAT</b> you have a field called <b>INTTYPE</b> (Internal data type (internal ABAP type)). Here in such cases you have the representation '<b>g</b>' for STRING and '<b>y</b>' for XSTRING. If you want, in SE11, you can check the <i><b>Domain INTTYPE</b></i> and it's <b>Value</b> range. I say this because in your first query you had said something about using 'g'.
I am not sure if this would serve your purpose.

Hi Lavanya
Here are the representations that can be used ABAP.
<b> Type Description DL Initial value
C Character 1 Space
N Numeric text 1 '00...0'
D Date YYYYMMDD 8 '00000000'
T Time HHMMSS 6 '000000'
X Byte (heXadecimal) 1 X'00'
I Integer 4 0
P Packed number 8 0
F Floating point number 8 '0.0'
STRING String variable empty string
XSTRING Byte sequence (X string) variable empty X string</b>

These predefined elementary data types are used to specify the types of individual fields whose lengths are not fixed until runtime. There are two predefined ABAP data types with variable length that are generically known as strings:
1.) <b>STRING</b> for character strings
A string is a sequence of characters with variable length. A string can contain any number of alphanumeric characters. The length of a string is the number of characters multiplied by the length required for the internal representation of a single character.
<b>XSTRING</b>for byte strings
A byte string is a hexadecimal type with variable length. It can contain any number of bytes. The length of a byte string is the same as the number of bytes.
When you create a string as a data object, only a string header is created statically. This contains administrative information. The actual data objects are created and modified dynamically at runtime by operational statements.
The initial value of a string is the empty string with length 0.
