ABAP learning track - input required

Hi everyone,

this is my first post... so please be gentle:).

I have currently just attended the SAPTEC course and want to continue with BC400, BC401, BC402.

I am not taking the BC100 course because I have programming experience and I think it would be kind of boring to go throw the base concepts again.

So my questions are:

- is this track ok for becoming an ABAP developer? (by this i mean - will I acquire the skills needed for a junior abap deveoper position)

- is there a better way than this one?

- are there some books that you can recommend? (i have no experience with SAP NetWeaver)

Any kind of input si much appreciated.

Thank you very much.

Andrei

I would strongly say YES! As long as you have access to these courses these should be the first you go for. They will introduce you with all basic concepts in ABAP world. So I would even say this is a MUST!

Alternatively you can pick one of available books on market. I don't want to make any advertisemnt to any of them but [ABAP Objects: Introduction to Programming SAP Applications|http://www.amazon.com/ABAP-Objects-Introduction-Programming-Applications/dp/0201750805] is the first I read and I really recommend this book. Anyhow it is based on R/3 4.6 release so not quite up to date. The same authors' book [ABAP Objects: ABAP Programming in SAP NetWeaver|http://www.sap-press.com/products/ABAP-Objects%3A-ABAP-Programming-in-SAP-NetWeaver.html?] but based on Netweaver (so covers also new concepts) is probably good continuation of the former one. I believe reading one of them from title-page to colophon will give you strong basic knowledge which you will improve over time.

I also own this one [Next Generation ABAP Development|http://www.amazon.com/Next-Generation-ABAP-Development-Heilman/dp/1592291392] by SAP mentors here in SCN, and I must admit is a good one too, but is rather aimed to advanced developers, so might be your next purchase in future.

Anyhow all books and training materials are fully covered in SAP documentation http://help.sap.com but book has nice topic segragation and sometimes skips the unnecessary details. Is not however enough for your "knowledge database" . You will shortly learn that finding and reading relevant documentation is also an ability which must be gained.

All the rest is forum, articles, wikis, blogs, practice, practice, practice and....determination

Good luck then on your ABAP-oriented developer track.

Regards

Marcin

Hi Marcin,

Thanks a for your rather quick and informative answer. I will try my best at the part with "practice, practice, ..practice".

Have a nice day.
