Hello everyone,
I am a big admirer of the Eclipse IDE and so was pretty excited when I came to know that a plugin for ABAP has been developed by CEON http://ceon.nl/abapeclipse/. I would like to know about your views on this product and whether anyone has used it before.
A pdf is available at the site explaining all its features but I want first hand reviews to persuade my Project Manager to use it in our project.
Also could anyone please tell me about similar third party tools which one can use to enhance productivity.
Thanks in advance.

I too am a fan of Eclipse. And it would be great if the workbench were fully integrated into Eclipse. I've had a look at this product, and although it has some great points, there are a few points that I'd be careful about.
1. Code is read from the SAP system into Eclipse. It is edited and then written back. This could cause complications when more than one person is working on an object.
2. The claims for code-completion giving enormous productivity hikes would certainly have been so before the new editor was available as part of SAPGui, but now we have code-completion there as well. ( Not as nice as I'd like - autocompletion of method names when we already know about the class, or fieldnames from a table would be good ).
I'd need to be really convinced that it would be faster to make the switch.

Hi Matt,
Thanks for your quick reply. I agree with you on the point that there could be some complications when multiple people are working on the same object, but I guess that can only be confirmed when someone has actually used this product. There may be some functionality to prevent one from overwriting someone else's code.
Regarding the second point about the new Editor having auto completion and code hints, I agree that the ABAP Editor has also incorporated some of these features, but it is still a far cry from the set of features available in Eclipse. Besides I am currently working in ECC 5.0 Netweaver 2004s where much of these functionalities is not yet available. Also keeping in view the fact that my client is not planning to upgrade anytime soon, this plugin seems apt for me. However, my main concern is its compatibility with the system and whether it is worth its salt.

I use a SAP Netweaver 2004s, and was surprised (and pleased) that the new editor was in fact available... checking your workbench settings. But then, my gui is very recent... I guess if I was still on the old new editor, I might have more interest. At the moment, however, it doesn't grab me. Especially as I'd have to pay u20AC300 to try it out. ( Not that that is an unreasonable fee for the software ).
I can say, from direct experience, that development is definitely quicker with code completion,in the new new editor.

What about installing this ABAP Eclipse? Do you know what has to be done to make this work? How does it communicate with the backend? Is it installed locally or is network installation also possible?
If anyone has some experience I would like to hear about it.
Potentially, it looks very nice, especially the code completion for methods of classes. Although I've heard that this feature is also available as of....and can be backported to release NW7.0 (??).
That would be a good reason not to use it. However a good reason to do is the UML functionality.

I thought I'd revive this thread since some time has passed. Has anyone tried the CEON Eclipse Plugin yet? I didn't see where they offered a "demo" version for download and it also did not look like they were a certified partner. I've thought for a long time that there would be a huge market for such a product, anyone tried it out yet?

There will be a demo/preview of a "native" ABAP in Eclipse (currently under development at SAP) shown at SAP TechEd 2010: * Las Vegas: http://www.sapteched.com/usa/edu_sessions/session.htm?id=131
Berlin: http://www.sapteched.com/EMEA/edu_sessions/session.htm?id=131

Even though autocompletion is neat, I'm more interested in the UML Generation tool that creates ABAP classes/methods/structures automatically from your UML model in Eclipse.
Demo: http://www.ceon.nl/abapeclipse/demoGenUML.php
Any info on that?
Alternatives?
