Hi,

I have been reading up on S4 HANA and how MSEG and MKPF has been combined into MATDOC. Is there any advantage of combining those two into MATDOC ? What does MATDOC provide which a query ion MSEG/MKPF cannot provide ?

Thanks

Hi GS

Its simplification

MSEG+MKPF have been combined

Stocks used to get stored in multiple tables like MARD, MARC, MBEW etc. All this was required to support the reports MB5B, MMBE etc

Now all this has been removed i.e. stock will not be stored at multiple places. And if you want the Stock as on date (Any date) report, it will be automatically compiled from the Line items in MATDOC

Inventoiry Qty and Values will now be managed in Material Ledger. Its now Obligatory with SFIN. You dont have to use Actual Costing and Transfer Prices, but ML is MUST

So if you have a look at all this changes combined, it only gives one message and that's SIMPLIFICATION

yeah I see all of that. But is speed the only benefit ? If it takes me 2 mins run a report which looks at MSEG and MKPF then will it take me 2 seconds to run the same report on MATDOC? Will I be able to get rid of my BW system and run all the LIS reports like MC46, MC50 etc which read MSEG ? I am trying to see what the business benefit in terms of dollars

Hi GS

The LIS structures remain in 1511, for now. In future releases, everything will be based on CDS Views

By removing all the redundant data, you save memory space, you save on reconciliation etc.

When you post a transaction now, SAP just has to update the Line item Table.. It does not have to insert summary records or indices in any table

Not everything can be translated into Dollars. Simplification has no price.

Maintenance of the system is going to be easy. It will help reduce the overall TCO

You can now cater to the business requirements in a faster and efficient way

If you were using BW system just for performance reasons, you can now discard that, as HANA can help you report on line items faster. But if you were using BW for other reasons like Pulling data from multiple instances and doing data harmonization, you will continue using it

Also, extracting data into BW will become easier now, as one or few info cubes will provide you all the data

As I said, Simplification has no price attached it.. But only has Value.. You must distinguish between Price and Value

Hi Ajay - Are you sure MARD, MARC, MBEW etc. tables removed which these are Master Data tables? MATDOC is transactional data tables. Let us know. Thanks, Rahul

Hi GS

The MATDOC will be a line item transparent table. There is no concept of aggregates in S/4 HANA. In traditional ECC, when you wrote a report on MKPF and MSEG, it will fetch the data based on some variables into an internal structure. The system would read the complete tables based on those parameters and than hold the relevant data into structure and than display the same into a report.

However, in S/4, since HANA is a columunar database, the system directly goes to the specific value and shows in a report or query. Morever, this is just one table and not two as earlier. So the processing is much faster.

I have tried to answer in simple way on how you can expect data to flow in S/4 HANA and why it is much better than traditional ERP.

Hi GS,

I am from FI and there we have ACDOCA table that it is a join with many tables too. So the benefits that you have table unique, it is because you have all the fields in only one table and you do not have to do a query in more than one table because all the fields is allocated in the same table added with high speed HANA.

But this is possible with the HANA technology, in other words without HANA you cannot do a simple query in the BSEG  or MSEG table because it takes a long time even if you create some tables indexes.

HANA comes to stay and we have to accept these changes about the high speed and and tables join.

Hi GS

One of the key things is simplification as others have already pointed out. Now in terms of dollar or sunsetting the systems, specifically BW, yes, you have embedded BW components in S/4 HANA which you can use. However, that depends on what kind of BW Reports you have today that depend on MSEG and MKPF. Additionally, in addition to logistics, you may have other reports and calculations in BW, which you probably may not have in S/4 HANA as of today and it may not be possible to sunset the BW completely.

You will have to analyze the same how the embedded cubes for Finance and logistics fulfill your existing reporting capabilities in BW and check if S/4 can completely meet them or not and than take a call. That will also help you come or check $ values for investment in S/4. Also think of the fact, that with S/4, you probably will need just one cube rather than multiple cubes for different tables, so it will also reduce your load runs for BW if you choose to go with S/4. This should in the immediate run, bring down your time to period close for that matter. So you can find $ saving there. Some of the reports or queries can come to HANA Live views which are in fact much better than BW in terms of usage and these will be real time.

So essentially, you will have to look at your existing reports and see how much of that can be translated into $ values should you choose S/4

Hi,

Apart from faster processing (through simplified data structure etc) and friendly user interface (Fiori) , Digital core of S4H also will combine many other applications which will provide huge functional benefits and lower TCO. Blog in below URL may be referred for benefits on unification of applications

Hi GS,

Your question is very logical , but note that the query on MSEG and MKPF takes long time .  MATDOC not only combines MSEG and MKPF , it also eliminates many aggregates and history tables.Totals will be calculated 'On the fly' through HANA In-memory columnar database and reporting will be much faster.

ok thx for the reply but when I looked at MATDOC table, it has about 296 fields. Thats slightly more than what MSEG and MKPF have to gether. I know that the history tables will be eliminated. But where will all that data go and will it be added to MATDOC ?
