Dear experts,

for performance test reasons, I would like to a make homogeneous system copy of an SAP system,

to another system, where the Oracle DB will be residing in an ASM disk group...

The source system is backed up using BRBACKUP with the usual procedure with alter ... begin backup

and then copying the data files to the backup destination. Kindly advise how to do that and if it is possible

to restore a classical BRBACKUP to an ASM storage ?

Many thanks!

Hello Symon,

I'm afraid that the other replies seem to miss the point and give "generic" answers to see if they are lucky.

Unfortunately, you can only migrate data with RMAN backup (or imp/exp ...)

the "old"/"traditional" backup with cpio/dd will not be able to enter the data (you will not be able to restore the data)

On SCN you have the SAP on Oracle Automatic Storage Management page and you can check there the document Best Practices for Migration of an SAP Database to Oracle ASM that describes how to migrate from filesystem to ASM

Hello Fidel,

you are completely right, many thanks that you took your time and wrote some human-made sentences, instead of just copy-pasting different stuff !!

I already had encountered the best practices document, but it is over 60 pages and I did not

have (and still don't have) time to go through it in detail.

So, just to summarize - I need to use a backup, made with RMAN, in order to be able to

restore it to an ASM instance... Kindly correct me, if it is not true.

And yes, of course the export/import method, as mentioned by Mauricio below, but an export requires the source system to be down, which in this case is not a desired option...

Many thanks in advance!

Hello.

How Fidel has mentioned, you can use RMAN to do the migration procedure.Furthermore you can make a Export/Import through SAPInst (SWMP) as well. During Target Oracle RDBMS installation, you setup ASM disks groups and use them in SAPInst steps.

Mauricio

Hi Symon,

Please also refer to SAP notes
