What are the OS level programs associated for moving objects from database to os and viceversa?

How would you decide upon kernel version for your system that you are going to install? How to create a kernel level trace? Determine if you are having a unicode or non unicode kernel?

I am working on an implementation project. Currently no SAP Kernel is decided for a standalone ABAP server. How should I determine which Kernel version to use?
