Markdown, like the <code> HTML tag is not supported.

Alternative solution: change the font to a mono-spaced font and change the color as needed.

My understanding reading this is that if there is an idea/suggestion to add a feature in the community - regardless if people find it useful or not, this idea can get declined just because the feature is not supported.

That does not make sense. If the feature was supported, the suggestion wouldn't be necessary. 

Apart from that, the suggestion is to provide code formatting and the feedback is about having support for markdown. Those are different things.

In addition, the alternative solution is to change the font and color which does not help on the formatting and has nothing to do with markdown support apart from making it even more time consuming for the users.

Pasting formatted, colorful and readable code should be 2 clicks task in SAP community when posting blogs, questions, comments or answers.
