The major risk is that once data is archived, it is very difficult to "un"archive it.

SAP Data Archiving is the only method supported by SAP to remove application data from the database in a consistent, secure and comprehensive manner.
u2022
Consistency is ensured through the use of checks performed by the archiving programs.
u2022
A purely database-integrated archiving is not used, because the database does not know the business context of the data to be archived.
u2022
Using data archiving we can select significant objects, such as accounting documents, material master records or HR master data, and remove them from the database, without having to worry about the fundamental table design of the linked data.

Hi,
I dont see any risks/disadvantages of data archiving. In general not frequently accessed data will be archived so that performance of the database access will be improved.

Hello RR,
Major risk is Reload of data back into database system. In many chances there is a risk of inconsistence of reloading of data back into all tables.
Apart from this other activities i can call as Concern (Instead of risk),
Some of the concern are:
1. Considering total retention period decision for business documents. Here we should consider different department like your Audit, FI team, Particular business owners, build team.
2. Archive server should be in place. (There are lot of clients who are keeping the archive files in the file directory. This could be of some concern)
3. WORM discs storage system should be used. Since these archived data is only for display purpose and should not be changed so WORM disc will help us in keeping the archived data with out allowing any changes)
4. Archived data can only be displayed but not changed.
Audit related Risk:
Data Archiving before implementing DART, Risk - For some of the Audit requirement, you have to consider data extracts from online data, Archive data and from BI information. Later there is a need to develop custom report for to suit Audit requirement.
This can be overcome by implementing DART and then going with Data archiving.
Retrieval Concern
For retrieval of archived data from archive server may utilize more time than the normal.
Conclusion: Apart from Risk you can find lot of advantages with archiving.
-Thanks,
Ajay

What is the Impact on archiving when you upgrade your SAP version from 4.7 to ECC 6.0
(Now we are working on 4.7 V and it will be changed to ECC 6.0, what will happen to archived data in 4.7) If any impact what are the precautions need to be taken.
