Not even once I got this doubt even though I am working on the same,but a good question.Let's see what Rich,Anji,Shiba and other SDN experts say.

Bkz sap deals with buisness implementation and buisness autometion and ABAP is a language specific for data process of large buisness organization. More over abap inharies most of its programming concepts from cobol and pascal and cobol is very efficient for buisness purpose.

Each of the programming language is efficient in specific areas:

1. Fortran for scientific calculation

2. C/Assembly language : System programming and driver programming

3. JAVA: web development and internet

4. C++ to develop application programs

Similarly

Cobol : Buisness purpose

And ABAP : data processing for business organizations

Moreover abap is a 4th generation language, so very easy to develop complex business related calculation and functionality achievements.
