Update Preferred Vendor OITM.[CardCode] by SQL

I need to update Preferred Vendor on Item Master table which is OITM.[CardCode]. I try to use SQL update. It works and I can update OITM.[CardCode]. Will it have any side effect, if I change OITM.[CardCode] only? What is the best way to change it - by SQL or any other tools? I need to update thousands item which is saved in Excel file. It is too much to update it manually. Thanks
