Transfering between applications, using ALE

Hi SAP Gurus ,

I am new to IDOCS could you any one clarify my doubt please

Suppose I am transferring the Purchase order data from one system to another system

those can be different servers or with in the same server.

when we are sending the purchase order data from from one system to another one receiving system will be sales system , and what will be the sending system( that means which application).

I have studied in arvind nagpal we will transfer between applications.

generally SAP is integrated one ,so what is the meaning of transferring between applications

could you please explain this one with business scenario.
