Steps in figuring out a solution for a given task

Hi all,

I would like to know, given a task how to figure out a solution .

For eg, we have a task where we need to send a confirmation mail to customers once the shipments are planned.

For any such task, how to go about. For eg, when should we look for availability of standard reports, when to create our own customizing reports and when should we look for user exits. And how do we know whether the given task can be done by some other means like workflow or something else. And is there any other way?

In short, for any given task, what are the various choices available for a abaper and on what basis decisions to be made.

Hi Aarthi,

There is no defined steps for it.

This comes along with exposure & experience.

But yes, you can do following steps whenever you are assigned a task:

1. Take inputs/guidance from your senior team members

2. Simply search about the task on SDN

3. Check SAP notes on www.service.sap.com

4. Any modification to fields/tables on SAVING or OPENING a standard transaction --> User Exit/BADI is required

Have a good mentor, & you should be soon able to figure out the steps for your tasks.

Best regards,

Prashant
