I had the same issue. We were able to get the business to accept a small tm with parentheses - (tm), rather than a super-script smaller font tm.

I was working down the path of trying to create a new character format in the "style" that is used by SO10. ( Go to SO10, menu path Environment -> Style.) However the wall I ran into was trying to find / change the style that is utilized by standard SAP.

I realize this is a full answer, but I hope it gives you some guidance.
