SMTP configuration

Dear Experts ,

    We are configuring SMTP configuration to connect to our Exchange server as pre requisite we got the SMTP port no, Mail server URL. Using this we can configure the SCOT as per the note 455140 . The problem raised now for configuring the same is we need to open the relay for the communication between SAP and Exchange server . Is the relay opening is required mandatorily . Is their any authentication process in SAP . Our excahnge server is in cloud environment so they said they cannot open the relay . Does the SMTP configuration be done only with the internal mail server . Kindly help on this regards !!!
