I mean what does the status waiting indicates?

This field indicates the current status of a work process.

Waiting : Process is waiting for requests

Running : Process is processing a request

On Hold : Process is waiting for a message. Column Reason specifies what the work process is waiting for.

Stopped : Process was terminated because of an error

Shutdown: Process shut down

Reserviert: Process is reserved

suppose you have started a job in background..when u see the status in sm37, it shows activ, but you want to know which statement is being executed..you can have a look in sm51, where it will show what's the statement that's being executed now, what mode of database command, like sequential read, insert, commit, etc. no. of records fetched, etc.
