You will only find folklore and superstition on this topic.. 🙂
For example, I would say that not using derived roles at all, nor their "put humpty dumpty together again" offspring of composite roles, is the best practice.
If you are using derived roles then the master/parent would typically be left without org levels (or at least those you are differentiating the child roles on). Assigning the master role would not give much benefit in this case.
As long as the choice that you make is understandable, consistent, properly documented and not bastardising standard SAP, then it's likely to be a viable design decision.
