Point your mouse to the 'Exchange Infrastructure' developer area here in SDN.

In short it is the integration platform from SAP to integrate SAP/non-SAP systems. This is a very simple definition but you can get more information here in SDN. There is no place like it.

Hi, in my understanding, Exchange Infrastructure (XI) is a message breaker, which receiving, handling, transfer many kind of message from many kind of interface. And in its inside, it convert all of the message into XML format.

If you have experience on Biztalk, or Webmethod, then you will understand it very quickly, they are the same kind of production.

With XI, you can add a message layer between R3 to otherside world, then in the EDI/ALE case, all of the integration will involve XI, using it as a middleware. The benefits is that if the target system or source system change, other partner don't need to concern the change too much, you can easily do some configuration on XI to adjust to make you whole framework suit to change.

Hi Abhishek,

XI is an integration broker. As the very term explains, it is an Enterprise Application Integration companent which helps to integrate an organizations various applications and enable to and fro data transfer between those.

In very very simple terms, if a company has been using many applications to maintain and process their data like excel files, data stage, peopl soft, etc and have SAP implemented new, XI acts as a platform or bridge for these legacy systems to talk to SAP and vice versa and exchange data between them. Since the data formats are different in the legacy systems and SAP, XI willl do the conversion part for both the parties and server as an integration broker.

Hope this gives you a very base understanding of what is XI.

Further you have numerous docs in the net. Just shoot a google and you get all.
