Hi can anyone tell me what is sandbox server and what is its purpose.

In the initial stages of any implementation project, You are given a sandbox server where you do all the configuration/customization as per the companies business process.
Once the BBP gets signed off, the configuration is done is development server and saved in workbench requests, to be transported to Production server.

It is not necessary that every development environment has a sandbox. Most of them however, do have it.
The dictionary meaning for the word sandbox says "a hole in the ground, or a box, filled with sand in which children can play". The actual meaning in the SAP context is not far from this. The sandbox is basically a place where the developers can do all sorts of experimenting when trying to learn something. They can usually do whatever they want, withot really having to complain "Oh! I do not have authorization to that transaction" and so on...
