Process configuration in background

Hi,

I have following problem. A sales order is created for a configured material variant. In customizing configuration is allowed, which means it would be possible to go to configuration and change the variant. But this won't happen - I only need this for object characteristics filled from SD item and configuration transferred to APO.

My Problem now is, that if configuration is not processed by the user - the system will only take configuration from material master (-> so no order specific characteristics in APO). How can I process the configuration before saving the order in background (maybe in USEREXIT_SAVE_DOCUMENT)?
