prefixes ABAP functions

Hello everybody,

Can you tell, what do prefixes of standard ABAP functions mean?

For example:

RPY_TRANSACTION_READ	
RS_COVERPAGE_SELECTIONS

What do <b>RPY</b> and <b>RS</b> mean. I think it documented but couldn't find any documents...

Hi Pavel,

I would think the prefix is a part of naming convention to group together application (programs/function modules) which can be categorised according to common functionality. A common one I can see is wit respect to HR_* which is a prefix for most Human Resource applications. Similarly RS_* is for ABAP list applications.

However I am wondeing regarding why it is of importance to you?

Hello Pavel

If you are searching for function modules then it is quite helpful to have some hints. Prefixes belong to these hints.

In case of <b>RPY_</b> and <b>RS_</b> most of the function modules appear to belong to the ABAP development workbench and the ABAP runtime.

<b>RH </b>function modules provide OM-related functionality.

<b>TR </b>function modules are related to the transport management (TMS/CTS).

Finally, often you will find that a TR... function module calls a corresponding <b>TRINT</b>... function module (e.g. TR_READ_COMM -> TRINT_READ_REQUEST). Here INT means internal. These internal function modules provide more functions than the TR function modules.

I do not think so. When I <b>search for function modules</b> using a prefix as search term (transaction SE37) I scan through the list of function modules and function groups. Based on this scanning you get a good impression of the main functionality provided by these function modules.
