I will not tell you about 4 former IBM employees...
Because it was FIVE former IBM employees!!! They were Dietmar Hopp, Hans-Werner Hector, Hasso Plattner, Klaus Tschira, and Claus Wellenreuther -- who created the company Systems Analysis and Program Development in Mannheim, Germany, and created the Financial Accounting System known as SAP-R, later known as the R/1 system(R = real-time data processing). This then evolved into R/2, then R/3 and now the Business Suite.
Hope this helps

SAP was founded in 1972 as Systemanalyse und Programmentwicklung ( System, Analysis and Program Development ) by five former IBM engineers in Mannheim. The five founders were Dietmar Hopp, Hasso Plattner, Klaus Tschira, Claus Wellenreuther and Hans-Werner Hector.
They created a financial Accounting system named R/1. (The "R" was for "real-time processing"). It was replaced by R/2 at the end of the 1970s. SAP R/2 was a mainframe based business application software suite.
The famous SAP R/3 was officially launched on 6 July 1992.
