Definition
The SAP MAPI Service Provider Interface (SAP MAPI SPI) is an interface which allows access to the R/3 mail server from MAPI-compatible mail clients. Examples of MAPI-compatible mail clients: Microsoft Windows MessagingTM, Exchange Client for Windows TM and Microsoft Outlook for Windows TM.
Use
SAP MAPI SPI offers:
Standard SAPoffice functionality
Integrated workflow support
Users can access SAP Business Workflow immediately, processing work items directly in the MAPI clients. In addition, work items can also be processed via SAPforms.
Extended SAPoffice functionality (offline support)
Users can take advantage of SAP MAPI SPIs offline support to process mail even without a live connection to the R/3 mail server. Offline users can read downloaded messages, as well as create and send messages. When the user logs on to SAPoffice again, the messages marked for sending are sent automatically. In addition, the user can copy, move, and modify messages offline. Any changes are updated automatically in SAPoffice during the next online session.
Extended SAP Workflow functionality (offline support)
Starting from R/3 Release 4.5A, limited Workflow functionality is also available when R/3 is offline. A custom Outlook form is used to render work items, and offline user actions on work items are committed to R/3 during the next online session.

Hi Sukumar,
I think instad of MAPI, now you should have a look at report RSWUWFML2 for sending external mails for work items. ( Check report's documentation for functionality )
Note: Also ensure that SAP system is configured for sending external mails(Use trx. SCOT for this check) .
Hope it helps,
